The most basic, and arguably most important, part of home security just went digital. This week technology company August released its Smart Lock system, which lets users control locks from their smartphones. The device and accompanying software are available for purchase on the company’s website or through the Apple Store for $250.
While the Smart Lock’s software uses the same complex encryption technology employed by major banks, its form is appealingly simple; the round device fits unobtrusively over an existing deadbolt. According to August cofounder Yves Béhar, the goal was to “create a product that is functionally and visually integrated into the home.” Béhar is no stranger to product design: His experience runs the gamut from technology (designs for Bluetooth and Jawbone) to fashion (a brand makeover for Birkenstock) to home decor (the Leaf lamp for Herman Miller).
August promises that the Smart Lock will take no more than ten minutes to set up. Should that not be the case, the company has certified over 300 locksmiths across the country who will come to the rescue. Once the lock is installed, access to your home can be granted with the swipe of a finger.
