Many of our homes have taken on a lot of extra roles this year: home gym, office, and even classroom. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the concept of home as a haven—a place where you can weather a storm, literally and figuratively, as well as rest, relax, and recharge.

And Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year for 2020 certainly evokes a sense of peace: this year, the shade is Aegean Teal (2136-40) , a mid-tone blue-green. Although the selection (along with its palette of 11 accompanying hues) was made in January, before the hectic events of 2020 took hold, the idea of harmony at home was certainly at the core of their choice.

Taken as a whole, the full 2021 palette is a collection of organic, muted shades that are both livable and approachable—the kind of colors you won’t be afraid you’ll tire of, whether you use them in big or small ways. “There’s a casual elegance and grounded sensibility in this palette,” said Hannah Yeo, Benjamin Moore Color & Development expert, in a webinar reveal of the color. While the palette contains both light and dark shades, most of the hues do skew warm in tone, making them extremely cozy and versatile for application.

Aegean Teal certainly draws its inspiration from the outdoors as does Amazon Soil (2115-30) , but other shades reference the joy in the small, simple moments that take place in the home. Muslin (OC-12) , for example, could bring to mind your favorite linen kitchen apron, while Potters Clay (1221) could be the shade of the terracotta planters that hold your houseplants. Atrium White (OC-145) and Silhouette (AF-655) are the soft, subtle white and charcoal shades rounding out the palette.

Because these colors feel so familiar and have an inherent tranquility, designers and homeowners shouldn’t feel afraid to incorporate them into spaces, particularly when it comes to Aegean Teal . “The blue tone creates a soothing effect, while the green brings the outdoors in,” says Chicago-based designer LJ Savarie of Savarie Interiors . “The overall aesthetic is one both approachable and relatable and, when used in a space, it will create rooms where you want to spend time.” She suggests pairing Aegean Teal cabinetry with Gray Cashmere (2138-60) on the walls or with Foggy Morning (2106-70) in a kids’ room. “It’s a super versatile and modern color,” she says.
