We first saw Sony's VW1000ES 4K projector in London earlier this year, but it was a pre-production model that wasn't calibrated for 3D viewing. The demonstration also didn't have any native 4K content, so while we left impressed with its ability to upscale 1080p Blu-ray footage, we couldn't evaluate its native performance.
That changed last week during a trip to Tokyo, where Sony had a production model on display for us to experience. With 2D and 3D versions of a trailer for the Amazing Spiderman, we could finally see what 4K content in the home will look like.
In a word, mind blowing - the detail is simply incredible, making it almost impossible to pick out the individual pixels of a scene. Now that Sony has managed to increase the brightness of the lamp from the first time we saw it, images were incredibly punchy and bright.
3D footage was incredibly immersive, with plenty of depth using Sony's active shutter glasses. We were worried that 3D content wouldn't be bright enough, but Sony has solved the problem and everything we saw looked very bright compared to 2D footage.
As there's currently no standard for delivering 4K content, the trailer was passed to the projector from a PC workstation using an adaptor - until a standard is decided, there's unlikely to be any official 4K content released. For now, you'll have to get your fix at the cinema, but the VW1000ES will at least bring 4K resolution to the home later this year.
